TODAYS WORSHIP

A FEW THOUGHTS ON TODAYS READING...

We live in very interesting times. Coexistence and tolerance to differing viewpoints was the norm in American society. But over time those in positions of authority have claimed the moral high-ground and are intolerant and will seek to punish those with opposing viewpoints. Morality is determined by societal standards and the Bible has been thrown out the window. Those who desire to follow the dictates of the Bible are deemed archaic, out of touch, hateful, bigoted, etc. Those who desire to live according to biblical standards are called intolerant, yet it is our freedoms which are not being tolerated. Notice some of the wording in ACOG Committee Opinion, Committee on Ethics, Number 385 which was initially put out in 2007, but was reaffirmed in 2019. For those unfamiliar, ACOG is the American College of Ob/Gyn. One small part of this statement says, "Although respect for conscience is important, conscientious refusals should be limited if they constitute an imposition of religious or moral beliefs on patients, negatively affect a patient's health, are based on scientific misinformation, or create or reinforce racial or socioeconomic inequalities." In this rather wordy statement on their part, it eventually reaches the conclusion that it is professionally for a doctor to either not perform or refer for abortions. Though any doctor may deem life to begin at conception, they would deem this scientific misinformation. Though any doctor would not perform or refer for others to perform this procedure to kill an unborn child, they deem this view as racist, intolerant, ignorant, etc. We are being judged and threatened by those who have no regard for the things of God. The question is who is our allegiance to? Will we stand for God and accept whatever happens, or will we compromise and justify doing things which God would never approve of based on our desire to make a living, support our families, etc. Whom do we ultimately trust in?

We read in Ezekiel 16:6,9, "And when I passed by you and saw you struggling in your own blood, I said to you in your blood, 'Live!'...Then I washed you in water; yes, I thoroughly washed off your blood, and I anointed you with oil." Throughout this portion of Scripture, God continues to state "I" did this or that to the recipients of His grace. It wasn't because they had earned it or deserved it, He lovingly provided for them. Likewise, we start off raw in our lives. We become doctors, teachers, lawyers, electricians, landscapers, etc. by His loving hand, though we like to often take credit that it is based on our hard work. Over time we rise in our field, but then we face decisions. We read in Ezekiel 16:22, "And in all your abominations and acts of harlotry you did not remember the days of your youth, when you were naked and bare, struggling in your own blood." The decision is who and what do we now base our decisions on. If you teach, you will have to decide whether you will teach LGBTQ or not. We can lie to ourselves with statements, like it is better for a Christian who compromises than no Christian at all. But that is secular reasoning and not how God would ever answer.
One slight compromise here, a slight adjustment that you believe no one will notice there, and we read Ezekiel 16:30, "How degenerate is your heart!" says the Lord God, "seeing you do all these things, the deeds of a brazen harlot." We are all facing tough decisions and will continue to face tough decisions. As we go through these trials, remember what was said in James 1:2-3, "My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience." If we hit that moment of decision and don't know what to do, we read a little further in 1:5-8, "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways." We would all do well to realize that it in these changing times, when the question is God or country, it is God. When it is God or profession, it is God. This is the first commandment in Exodus 20:3, "You shall have no other gods before Me." Elevating anything above Him and compromising in opposition to Him, whether you want to admit it or not breaks that first commandment.

THIS WEEKS MEMORY VERSE

My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. ~James 1:2-3

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

The Lord does not so much look at the work that is done, as at the faithfulness of our hearts in doing it.

These Corinthians, they were falling back into some of their old ways of thinking. And so Paul says, Dear brothers and sisters, when I was with you, I couldn't talk to you as I would to spiritual people. I had to talk to you as though you belong to this world or as though you were infants in Christ. I had to feed you with milk, not solid food, because you weren't ready for anything stronger. And. Guess what? That's my own word, but it says, And you still aren't ready, you are still controlled by your sinful nature. You're jealous of one another and quarrel with each other. Doesn't that prove that you're controlled by your sinful nature? Aren't you living like people of the world? When one of you says, I'm a follower of Paul and another says, I follow Apollos. Aren't you just acting like people of the world? After all, who was Apollos? Who was Paul? We are only God's servants through whom you believed the good news. Each of us did the work that the Lord gave us. I planted the seed in your hearts and Apollos watered it, but it was God who made it grow. Paul is saying, essentially, don't you see that both are needed? If you're going to win people to Christ, it has to be simple and pared down to the essentials. But then, if you're going to grow in Christ, there has to be much deeper teaching. You have to go on to deeper things, and it takes the simple presentation of the gospel to plant the seed, but it takes a much deeper rational presentation of Christian truth to make a person grow and be watered. Though all the time, it's only God who enables the whole thing to grow.

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths." Proverbs 3:5-6
