A FEW THOUGHTS ON TODAYS READING...

Notice what it says concerning the power and the bravado behind the world's leaders in Job 12:17-24, "He leads counselors away plundered, And makes fools of the judges. He loosens the bonds of kings, And binds their waist with a belt. He leads princes away plundered, And overthrows the mighty. He deprives the trusted ones of speech, And takes away the discernment of the elders. He pours out contempt on princes, And disarms the mighty. He uncovers deep things out of darkness, And brings the shadow of death to light. He makes nations great, and destroys them; He enlarges nations, and guides them. He takes away the understanding of the chiefs of the people of the earth, And makes them wander in a pathless wilderness." The Bible recounts much of the world's history from God's perspective. Nations come and go, leaders come and go, when and only when He decides they come and go. For those who like to place their hope and trust in their next political leader or their political party, we read in Job 15:31, "Let him not trust in futile things, deceiving himself, For futility will be his reward."

We must all step back and ask ourselves where our hope and trust truly lies. Is our hope and trust in God or in man? James clearly states that a choice must be made as we read in James 1:5-8, "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways." When seeking a leader, we would do well to pray 2 Chronicles 7:14, "if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land." For those of us who have accepted God as our only real leader, may we all seek His counsel in every facet of our lives, including who we choose to vote for. Everything else which seeks to blur what the Bible speaks as truth will lead us astray. When we choose to do this, we will look less and less like the rest of the world. Jesus clearly warns us, that when we do this, we will probably be hated rather than loved by the those in the world. Jim Eliot, missionary who was martyred at the age of 28, said it so clearly, when he said, "He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose." That is a slogan which sounds so different from those in the world of politics.
